PKP class EU43 / FS class E412
|
In 1997 PKP ordered ten new high-speed locomotives from ADtranz Corporation,
whereas a series of eight locos should be delivered as dual-voltage version named
class EU43. Because a similar locomotive called class E412 was delivered to
Italian FS in 1993, the first bunch of engines for Poland was produced at
ADtranz-Italia. The main
part of the order was/is built at ADtranz-Pafawag in Wroclaw/Breslau. |
 |
|
|
The dual-voltage version was designated for international use between Poland and
Germany to replace DB class 180 in front of ECs Berlin-Warsaw. FS class E412 was
intented to work trains between Italy, Austria and Germany.

In contrast to other multi-voltage locos this class
has only two pantographs, one for each system. The front room of the Italian
version was adapted to German/ Austrian standards, because the driver's seat is
located on the left in Italy and on the right in Germany/Austria.
The locomotives are able to run - with less power - under 1,5 kV DC, too. |

Because PKP couldn't afford the ordered 50 locos, they weren't delivered by AdTranz.
After rumours about replacing Belgium's
» class 16, they they were sold by Bombardier,
who meanwhile took over AdTranz, to Italian Rail Traction Company (RTC).
As their Italian sisters of class E 412 the machines belonging to RTC never regularly
worked beyond Brenner station although capable for operation under 15 kV and fitted
with the necessary security equipment for Austria and Germany.
In 2004 ÖBB finally permitted running in the northern part of Brenner sidings,
to avoid "pushing back" into the Italian section by Austrian shunters.
|
Beside RTC class 43 various other multi-voltage locos reach border-station Brenner(o).
Since May 2004 five multiple-voltage locos of class ES 64 F4 (class 189) belonging
to Siemens' Dispolok (and also hired by RTC) work trains between Munich and Verona.
The five Austrian locos numbered 1822, the first electric machines passing the border in 1996,
still run to Puster valley, whereas several EC-trains are beeing hauled by
dual- or multi-voltage locos at both rampes towards Brenner station, but neither
class » ES 64 U2 (Taurus) nor FS class
E 402B can take advantage of their capability to work under 25 kV in this
situation.
