Siemens ES 64 U2 aka "Taurus"
In 1996,
the österreichische Bundesbahnen (ÖBB)
ordered 50 single-voltage (1016) and 350
dual-voltage (1116) locos from Siemens /
Krauss-Maffei (Germany) based on DB-class
152 as a part of the
"Eurosprinter"-family. The
styling of the new Austrian star, the
name of which means "bull", is
different from that of class 152, in
particular its front area has a more
aerodynamic form to make it suitable for
high-speed operation.
Also, compared with DB-class 152, its
drive puts less stress on the tracks. Although
Taurus is absolutely "up to
date", it's much cheaper than
comparably locos of other producers.

The
locos (official name ES 64 U2)
are assembled in Linz/Austria and München-Allach.
Permission for operation in Germany
(1016) and on Hungarian tracks (1116) has
been agreed by contract. Furthermore, the
machines are equipped for use in Czech
Republic and Slovakia. Since april 2002 are also
permitted to run in Switzerland.
Single-voltage
Taurus have been in service since January
2000 on the Westbahn and the
Tauernstrecke. Operation in Germany
(especially on the "corridor-line"
between Salzburg and Innsbruck and on
freight trains to Munich-South) started
in July 2000. On 4th August 2000,
however, permission for use on DB-AG
tracks was withdrawn for several weeks because the loco was
causing interference to track-circuits. |

The locos are used for both
passenger-trains and freight-trains. The
dual-voltage Taurus will haul services
running through to or from points on
lines electrified at 25kV/50Hz, such as
passenger-trains to Budapest and
freight-traffic to Breclav, in some cases
replacing ÖBB classes 1014/1114 which
are not very numerous.
Meanwhile 10 "Tauri" belong to Hungarian railways
MAV and 5 locos belong to Hungarian private operator GySEV.
DB AG has order 25 similar
dual-voltage locos, to be known as new
class 182, because its class 152 locos
are not allowed to run in Austria.
3 locos in silver livery are in property of Hupac and 38 locos will be part of Siemens-Lokpool Dispolok.
