JT 42 CWR aka "class66"

In 1998 the first bunch of dieselelectric locos JT 42 CWR, built in London/Ontario (Canada) by EMD General Motors, was delivered to Europe. The locos were ordered by English Welsh & Scottish Railway and classified as British class66.

In 1999 private operator Häfen und Güterverkehr Köln decided to order two similar diesels - the first ones used on the European continent. The HGK locos (also fitted with Dutch safety system ATB-L) fulfilled their duties around Cologne, between Cologne and Rotterdam as dutch inland services. Quickly "class66" became the common title and their peculiar British clearance profile raised attention at the tracks.

At the end of 2001 the first of currently three locos was delivered to Belgian operator Dillen en le Jeune Cargo and this loco (PB 03) pulled the first private train on the Belgium network in April 2002 between Antwerpen docks and Aachen-West (Germany). Since 2003 also services to the Netherlands and Luxembourg are operated by these locos.

In 2001 the Swedish operator TGOJ and ShortLines, the Dutch partner of HGK, received two locos each. Because no electric loco capable for 15kV AC (Germany), 3kV DC (Belgium) and 1,5kV DC (Netherlands) was available, rail4chem decided to order a first JT 42 CWR at the end of 2002.

The numbering scheme PB xx as used for locos of Shortlines, DLC and new HGK diesels refers to the fact they are leased from Porterbrook. Locos for continental use arrive in Rotterdam and are equipped with individual safety systems at Nedtrain in Tilburg (NL). A second dutch operator - ERS (European Rail Shuttle) works long-distance trains to Germany (- Italy) via border-stations » Venlo and » Emmerich.

Meanwhile class66 has full permission for operation in Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden and Norway, and permission with limitations in Luxemburg and Denmark.
Ikea Rail started service between Peberholm and Padborg (Denmark) with their TGOJ T66 of Swedish operator TGOJ in summer 2002, while HGK and DLC leased further locos of class 66 after their positive experiences. Shortlines' PB 01 crashed in Roermond may 2003, but was rebuilt and is running again. According to a press release, Ikea Rail is being liquidated and will stop running its freight trains on January 15th. The startup costs were high and the trains too expensive to run.
