DSB class EG
Following the opening of the fixed Great Belt link in 1997, DSB freight
division "DSB Gods" was in heavy need of new powerful
electric locomotives to pull international freight trains
on the heavy grades on the ramps to the bridge and tunnel.
When opened many trains had to be run with class EA
electrics working in multiple or even triple. This was of
course unsatisfying, so following initial work since 1995
the 13 locomotives class EG was ordered with "Siemens
AG Verkehrstechnik" on the 22. August 1997.
The locomotives are designed to allow through freight trains Sweden-Denmark-Germany,
since the fixed Øresund Belt link was opened in
2000. Since the electric current used in Sweden and Germany
is not the same as the Danish, they are dual system locomotives,
capable of working with both the Danish 25kV 50Hz and the
Swedish and German 15kV 16 2/3 Hz current.

Furthermore it was necessary to equipe them with both Danish and Swedish ATC as well
as German INDUSI security systems.
The machines are capable
of hauling a 2000 tones freight train with a speed of 120
km/h, as well as haul the 2000 tones on the 15,6 promilles
grade at the Storebælt fixed link. Since they are not
capable of delivering electrical train heating, they aren't
used for passenger trains.
The locomotives are based on the German "Eurosprinter" design (known
as DB class 127). Other locomotives based
on this design are used in Spain, Portugal and Greece. The
"second generation" Eurosprinter, the DB class
152, has been the prototype for the DSB
EGs, from where it has its rounded body style. Traction and
electronics parts have been build by Siemens - Bereich Verkehrstechnik
and include the SIBAS 32 control system, while the bogies
have been made by Siemens Duewag Schienenfahrzeuge GmbH (Krefeld-Uerdingen,
well known in Denmark for building the "Lynette"-DMU's
of the private railways) and the Siemens SGP Verkehrstechnik
GmbH (Graz, Austria). The locomotive bodies have been built by
the Siemens Krauss-Maffei Lokomotiven GmbH (München).

The first locomotive, DSB EG 3101, was presented at a "Roll-Out"
at the Siemens Krauss-Maffei Lokomotiven GmbH factory in München
on 3. August 1999. Since the roll-out the locomotive was
moved to the Wegberg-Wildenrath test circuit,
before going to Denmark, Sweden and Germany for tests in daily use.
|
The locomotives were initially planed to be in a totally red
livery, but since the presentation of the new DSB design scheme
in 1998, the locos are finished in the new DSB Gods blue and
yellow livery, including the new style "winged wheel".
The first locomotives started working from October 1999, about
6 locomotives were ready by 1. July 2000, when the Øresund
link opened, and the total batch of 13 locos had been delivered
by the end of 2000.

Class EGs are used throughout on two Hallsberg (Sweden) -
» Padborg freight trains from 6. April
2002 on weekends. This saves time for
shunting and loco-change i Malmö. From the timetable change on 16. June 2002
'Railion Denmark' class EGs are used all the way to Maschen freight yard south
of Hamburg (Germany),
a total of 1000 km, crossing two border stations.
It is intended to work all freights from Hallsberg, Göteborg and Malmö
to Hamburg-Maschen throughout by electric dual-voltage locos
(also DB class 185).
